Along the Riviera

Along the Riviera

Sothiares follows the coast road for the Linen Collection, photographed between the harbour and the hills of the Italian Riviera

Shot over two mornings in early summer, before the town wakes up

The hour before the town opens

There is a particular window on the Riviera, roughly between six and eight, when the coast belongs to almost nobody. The shutters are still down. The awnings are still folded. A man in a linen shirt walks to the bar for a coffee he will drink standing up, and he is dressed, properly dressed, though it took him ninety seconds and no thought at all.

That is the whole idea behind this collection. Not the holiday. The ordinary morning inside it.

Why linen, honestly

Why linen, honestly

Linen has a reputation for being difficult. It creases the moment you sit down. It refuses to hold a press. Half the industry treats this as a flaw to engineer out, usually by blending in enough synthetic to kill the very thing people wanted.

We went the other way. The weave is open. It moves air. On a thirty degree afternoon that is not a detail, it is the entire reason the garment works.

The creases are not a failure of the cloth. They are the cloth telling you it is real.

The Portofino Linen Shirt

The anchor of the collection, in white, navy and a light blue that reads almost grey in the early light. Cut generously through the body on purpose. A linen shirt that clings defeats itself, so this one does not.

Worn open over nothing, or buttoned with the sleeves pushed up, it covers most of what a summer asks for.

The Linen Resort Overshirt

In olive green and navy, the answer to a problem the Mediterranean poses every evening. Warm all day, then suddenly not, the moment the sun drops behind the hill.

Structured enough to read as a jacket, light enough that carrying it costs you nothing.

For this season, we embraced a more classic approach, selecting a beautiful full-grain leather in a rich Chocolate Brown colorway. While its understated elegance may not demand attention at first glance, it's the kind of leather that invites a second look.

Crafted to stand the test of time, this full-grain leather develops a unique patina with every wear, aging beautifully and becoming even more distinctive over the years.

What the Riviera actually teaches

The best dressed men on that coast are rarely the most considered ones. They own a handful of things that work, they wear them constantly, and they have long since stopped thinking about it. There is no styling. There is a shirt, some trousers, something to throw on when the wind picks up off the water.

That confidence is difficult to manufacture and impossible to buy at the price the luxury houses ask for it. Most of what they charge for is the name on the label, not the flax in the cloth. We think the cloth should be the expensive part.

So this collection is small. A few pieces that combine without being told how.
